Is International Open Academy Worth It in 2026? Costs, Certificates and Credit
4.5 / 5
Overall Rating
International Open Academy
International Open Academy suits low-cost, self-paced skills courses and CPD points, not college credit: certificates are sold separately, courses run on a 60-day clock, and its main accreditor says it is not a governmental body.

Is International Open Academy worth it in 2026?
International Open Academy is worth it only as a low-cost way to take self-paced skills courses or log CPD points, not as a route to college credit or a recognized qualification. Its courses run on a 60-day study window, certificates cost extra, and its main accreditor, ICOES, describes itself as "not a public or governmental institution."
This review is built from IOA's own terms, course and help pages and the published pages of the bodies it names, rather than first-hand use.
In IOA's own listings (checked October 2026), a single course such as Accounting & Bookkeeping shows $142.00 USD, the yearly membership is advertised at $185.90 a year, and completion documents are sold separately at listed prices from $17.00 to $55.00.
What International Open Academy is
IOA sells individual online courses and an all-courses membership rather than degree programs. Its terms of use state that the website "is owned and run by North Royal Training Limited", give a company address in Dublin, and say the terms "are governed by Irish law." The same page records a consolidation: the brand "has recently completed the merger of the following websites Trendimi.com, Hollyandhugo.com and Eventtrix.com," and students from those sites now study through IOA's Virtual Campus.
The catalogue is wide. The membership page describes "over 300 courses and counting", mixing "IOA Originals", which IOA says are "developed in-house", with courses made by outside creators, offered in English, French and Spanish. Entry is open to anyone: the Accounting & Bookkeeping page says "no formal qualifications are required to study with us."
That openness tells you what the courses are for. None of the IOA pages cited here describes a course as carrying academic credit toward a degree; they describe certificates of completion and CPD (continuing professional development) points instead.

Prices are as shown on IOA's course, membership and accreditation pages. The store also displays other currencies and labels products "On Sale", so the amount at checkout can differ.
The budgeting point to read before buying: certificates are not part of the course price. IOA's help centre says the documents "are not included with the course purchase unless specifically mentioned in the deal under which the course was bought," and that they "are not standalone items and should only be purchased with a course or a subscription." A course plus an ICOES digital certificate therefore means paying both listed prices.
The membership changes that picture. The yearly plan "includes 10 Certificates of Achievements (valued €239) at sign up" and gives "a full year of access instead of only 60 days," while the one-time lifetime option "expires 10 years after the initial payment." Monthly and yearly plans continue automatically unless you cancel.

What "accredited" means on IOA's pages
IOA's course pages carry the line "ICOES Accredited. IAPCC and CPD Certified." Here is how each of those bodies is described, and none of them is a college.
ICOES
IOA's terms say "our courses are accredited by the International Council for Online Educational Standards (www.icoes.org)." The ICOES FAQ says it "is not a course provider" but "an accreditation institute that accredits the educational course offering of a large number of course providers," and that its certificate is issued "on the basis of the information that ICOES receives from the course provider." The same FAQ explains that embassies cannot legalize an ICOES certificate "since ICOES is not a public or governmental institution."
In other words, an ICOES certificate is an optional, paid proof of completion. ICOES itself calls it something "the student can purchase besides or instead of the certificate from their relevant course provider."
IAPCC
The International Association of Private Career Colleges describes itself as "an independent, non-government and non-profit organization established under Swiss law" and as "a global umbrella membership organization for private providers delivering career education and training." It says it runs a code of ethics and "facilitates a quality assurance program" for members.
CPD Certification Service
IOA's accreditation page calls the CPD Certification Service "the foremost independent accreditation organization worldwide, spanning all industry sectors." IOA says it is "a recognised member of The CPD Certification Service, meaning that some of our courses are approved for continued professional development (CPD/CE points)," and adds: "We are in the process of having all our courses assessed." Other IOA pages word this more broadly. The accreditation page says "nearly all our courses boast CPD certification," and the membership page says "most of our courses" earn CE/CPD credits. IOA says each course's CPD status is "prominently showcased on each course's product page", so check that page if CPD hours are the reason you are buying.
What these labels do not tell you
As described above, all three are independent or private bodies, and none is presented as a government agency. IOA does claim that "CE/CPD points are accepted and recognized by professional member bodies and academic institutions across the US and internationally," but the pages cited here do not name those bodies, so confirm with the board or employer you report to. If you need credit toward a degree, the accreditation that matters belongs to the college awarding it; our guide to checking whether an online college is accredited shows where to look that up.
How the courses and exams work
Each course is self-paced but runs against a deadline. Under IOA's terms, a course "must be activated within 12 months of registration," and "each course is valid for 60 days from the date of course activation." Extra time is sold as an add-on, with "course study time extensions" listed among the optional products, or it comes with the membership.
Workload is stated per course. The Accounting & Bookkeeping page lists "Recommended Study Time: 30 hours" and says "completion is recognised with 30 CPD points."
Assessment is light. IOA's help centre says "each course has exams at the end of each module," that the "questions are a mix of true/false and multiple-choice and will be scored immediately," and that passing needs a minimum of 55%. If you fall short, "you have the opportunity to retake the questions that you got wrong," and the terms add "one free resit per exam task until a 55% score is achieved." Completion also requires working through the course "100% (all pages saved)." None of the IOA pages cited here mentions a supervised or proctored exam.
Refunds, renewals and the fine print
- Refund window: IOA offers "refunds within 14 days of purchase." If you have not started, "you are entitled to a cash refund"; if you have started but not finished, IOA "may issue a refund in the form of a gift card"; after completion or once 14 days pass, it is "unable to issue a refund."
- Starting early waives the EU cooling-off right: opening a course or membership benefit inside the 14-day period means you "agree to waive your right of withdrawal under EU law."
- Documents are final sale: IOA lists its letters and certificates as non-refundable "due to their instantaneous nature," and the PDF certificates from the bodies that accredit its courses are non-refundable too.
- Renewals: a subscription is "set automatically on auto renewal," and "cancellation must occur before the next payment is due."
- Pay first: "Courses must be paid for in full before the course can be started."
Who it is worth it for, and who should look elsewhere
Worth a look if you want an inexpensive, self-paced introduction to a topic; you log CPD hours with a body that accepts CPD-certified courses; or you want to sample a subject before paying for a credit-bearing program.
Look elsewhere if you need credit that a college will transfer; an employer or licensing board asks for a named, regulated qualification; or you expect to need more than 60 days per course and do not want to buy extensions or a membership.
If it fits, the choice is between one course at its listed price and the membership if you plan several courses and want certificates bundled. Check the price at International Open Academy on the day you buy, since many products carry an "On Sale" label.
If credit is the goal, compare credit-bearing certificates and associate degrees instead; our comparison of online associate degrees and certificates for a career switch covers that trade-off, or you can see our full shortlist.

FAQ
Is International Open Academy legit?
It is an operating business with published terms: the site is run by North Royal Training Limited, which lists a Dublin address, a company number and a VAT number in its terms. Legitimate is not the same as credit-bearing, though. Its certificates document completion of an IOA course, and none of the pages cited here presents them as college credit.
Do International Open Academy certificates count as college credit?
Nothing on the IOA pages reviewed here says so. They describe CPD/CE points and certificates from IOA, ICOES, IAPCC and the CPD Certification Service. Each college sets its own transfer rules, so ask the registrar before relying on any certificate.
How much does an IOA certificate cost?
It is priced separately from the course: $27.00 for IOA's own Certificate of Achievement, $33.00 for an ICOES digital certificate, $55.00 for an ICOES hard copy, and $44.00 each for the CPD and IAPCC certificates (checked October 2026). The yearly membership includes 10 Certificates of Achievement.
Can I get a refund from International Open Academy?
Within 14 days of purchase: cash if you have not started, possibly a gift card if you have started but not finished, and nothing after completion or after the window closes. Certificates and letters are non-refundable.
Is the IOA membership better value than a single course?
That depends on how many courses you will finish. The yearly plan gives a year of access instead of 60 days and bundles certificates, but it renews automatically, so note the renewal date if you only want one year.
